Many things can cause open wounds – from animal bites and severe burns to bacterial infections. If left untreated, wounds can lead to pus, tissue inflammation, fever and even gangrene. Chronic conditions like diabetes and peripheral artery disease can impair blood flow and oxygen delivery to the wound, making it more susceptible to infection.

Assess the wound

The first step in wound care is a thorough diagnosis by a medical professional at Manatee Health in Central Florida. Doctors evaluate the type, size, depth and location of the wound, as well as the patient's health and medical history to discover underlying conditions that caused the wound and may affect healing.

Clean the wound

Cleaning the wound is essential to remove dirt and bacteria. Medical providers may use sterile saline or antiseptic solutions to irrigate the wound. If there is necrotic (dead or dying) tissue, it must be removed.

Dress or bandage the area

Proper dressing and bandaging can protect the sore or wound from infection and promote a healing environment. Doctors select dressings based on the wound type and stage of healing.

Prevent infection

Preventing infection is a primary concern in wound care. Doctors may prescribe antibiotics, if necessary, and explain proper wound hygiene and aftercare practices. A tetanus shot may be required if the wound is deep or contaminated with soil or debris.

Patients may need some type of follow-up care or clinical evaluation to get the all-clear from their medical providers.

When to use hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a specialized treatment used to enhance wound healing by delivering high concentrations of oxygen to the bloodstream in a pressurized chamber. Noninvasive HBOT therapy expedites wound healing, reduces edema (swelling), eases inflammation and enhances the body's ability to fight infections.

Plan to spend up to three hours for each HBOT visit. Also, smoking can prolong or prevent wound healing due to its effect on blood vessels. Please don’t smoke during this time.
